Paired with the Tiger I’s flawless Carl Zeiss TZF 9b optics, the KwK 36’s high muzzle velocity and flat trajectory let crews knock out Allied tanks well beyond 1,500m — often outside the effective return range of enemy guns.
The Pzgr. 39 APCBC was the standard round: a soft cap gripped angled armor while the ballistic cap preserved velocity downrange, with a delayed base fuze detonating the explosive filler after penetration.
The Pzgr. 40 APCR swapped that for a tungsten carbide core, giving devastating close-range penetration on flat plate but falling off sharply at distance — and becoming increasingly scarce from 1943 as German tungsten supplies dried up.
The Gr. 39 Hl HEAT round used chemical energy instead of velocity, delivering identical penetration at 100m or 2,000m, making it a dependable long-range or backup option.
Ejected casings built up intense heat and cordite smoke in the turret basket, so crews swept them off the floor and pitched them out through the small rear-right escape hatch during any lull in the fight.
