Precast concrete culverts are civil infrastructure built to carry water beneath roads and railways — standardised, load-bearing, and designed for rapid deployment. In conflict zones, those same qualities make them immediately useful for entirely different purposes.

Their mass stops small arms fire and fragmentation. Partially buried pipe sections become improvised shelters and hardened fighting positions; box culverts are repurposed as guard towers, ammunition stores, and protected command posts.

Larger joined sections create underground aid stations and civilian shelters that remain functional when surface structures are destroyed.

Underground, culverts become movement corridors. From Vietnam to urban battles in Ukraine, defenders have integrated pipe networks into defensive systems — concealed routes for manoeuvre between positions, beyond the reach of aerial surveillance and indirect fire.
